Friends of Galup

Galup is an urban wetland and recreation reserve managed by the Town of Cambridge.
The Friends of Galup (formerly the Friends of Galup / Lake Monger) was formed in early 2022 and is a community-based organisation run by volunteers.
Our goal is to promote environmental sustainability of Galup.
Our agreed priorities are:
  • Conservation of our endemic flora and fauna
  • Culture and history
  • Community engagement
  • Improving the wetland environment
  • Strengthening the Friends of Galup
  • Liaison with the Town of Cambridge
Our activities, usually in the form of our monthly “busy bees”, have included rubbish clean-ups, weeding and planting.  These are carried out with the knowledge and support of the Town’s administration.
The Friends of Galup is a member of the WA Gould League Wetland Alliance.

Water quality at Galup is an ongoing area of concern. The water is toxic and recent years have seen a noticeable reduction in bird-life. Water quality will be an area of focus for the group going forward. Channel 9 News reported on this on June 14th 2026.

HEALTH WARNING
Town of Cambridge is warning that the water at Galup contains both high levels of E coli bacteria (can cause diarrhoea and wound infections) and blue-green algae (can cause skin irritation and diarrhoea, toxins can also have an effect on the liver and the nervous system). Please keep children and pets away from the water and do not allow children to fish in the lake (discarded fishing tackle also causes significant injury and death to wildlife).
If you come into contact with affected water, you should remove any affected clothing and wash yourself thoroughly with clean water.
